WOOOOO!!! Denver Comedy Works, what a true delight every single time. I started hearing legend about Comedy Works denver (downtown location) when I was maybe 3-4 years in stand up. Everyone always says it’s the hottest room in comedy. Hot room means, it’s like pretty easy to do really well there. Ari and I always joke that when you do comedy works you feel like a god and then you go to a different city and you get humbled again because truly nothing matches the sound of laughter in that room. There’s a lot of theory about why it’s such a great room. I think it’s because of the basement, tilted seats and stone walls. The laughter has nowhere to go other than right into your face. Also, the Denver audience is always so incredible. Apparently Denver has one of the most educated populations of any city or something. Which is funny because I don’t think it takes a degree to understand my pussy jokes… but I guess it did help! Also they’re always pretty well behaved. Wendy is the OG booker of the club, she’s been a comedy legend for about 30 years. Every legendary comedian absolutely raves about her. Not to mention the really kind and fun staff she’s out together over the past few years. Ari and I have done Comedy Works two times now and both times our server was Tanya. She’s been at the club for I think she said 20-30 years!!! People like her make a club so special. We love Tanya so much, such a fun and funny person and always so attentive to us.
COMEDY WORKS CONDO
Honestly one of the best parts of doing downtown Comedy Works is how nice the comedy condo is! Super close to the club, in a big fancy condo complex Wendy has curated a super funky and cool two bedroom two bathroom condo with an amazing patio. Also, I’m not sure if it was Wendy or someone who helps her but someone had the great idea to begin a comedian art gallery, basically every comedian that stays at the Comedy Works condo makes a 4x4 art piece and they hang it on the wall. It’s cool to see all the comedians before you like Ari Shaffir, Jordan Jensen and Akaash just to name a few of them. Ari and I made one, I posted it as the header of this post. It’s honestly my best work ever. It’s really close to a lot of great places, for me all I need is a coffee spot, a heated workout and an asian food place. These are the three things I need to survive a weekend of comedy. Though I’m still in search for truly great Thai food in Denver, everything else was so accessible it’s such a blessing to work at this club!
DENVER IN GENERAL
One of these days when I go to Denver I hope to be in a place financially where I can rent a car and go see come mountains during the day. Or even stay a few extra days just to camp. I quit smoking weed maybe 3 months ago (I’m always on and off weed) so I kind of get nervous going to cities where it’s so legal. It’s like part of me is sad that I’m missing out. I love weed! The only reason I don’t smoke is because I am not as good at stand up when I smoke, even if I take a day or so off my brain just isn’t functioning as good. I’m glad that I’m off but I do start missing it sometimes… really just when I’m having a lazy day I’m like man a joint would be good. Honestly on the road is when weed is the worst! All of the traveling and different climates makes your respiratory system so exhausted already and then to add smoking anything in and out of your system it’s a nightmare. I was sick all of the time, constant runny nose. It’s been nice just feeling better and sharper. That’s how it was being in Denver, sure I felt a little bummed especially because the fans bring free weed and stuff. All in all, every city I don’t smoke but I could… I feel really grateful for! Bummer about Denver is that from my experiance every Thai spot downtown was dogshit, other than Aloha Thai or something… That’s not the name and the food was MID but not trash. Everything else was trash. Great city tho, last day I found a thrift store that’s also a bar???? so fkn denver. I hope to come back!
